The Coconut Man

While taking a walk through some rice paddy farmland in Ubud, we met this lovely man who offered to climb his palm tree to get us a coconut to drink. He used some palm leafs to create a strap, which he used to shoot up the tree in about 10 seconds! He chopped down a massive coconut and then came down and prepared it for us so we could drink out of it. After we drank it, he cut it open and got the flesh out for us to eat. It was an amazing, random (and delicious) experience and we felt really lucky to have bumped into him!

Spiritual Bali

The Balinese are very spiritual people and the island is primarily Hindu. Every day, little offering trays are made or purchased, consisting of woven bamboo, flowers, rice and inscence sticks. These trays are placed on the ground and offered to the spirits every morning. A statue of Hindu elephant god Ganesha is a very common site in doorways and entrances.

Ubud is a really nice wee town, inland on Bali. It’s known as the cultural and artistic heart of the island and had a really relaxed vibe, with lots of surrounding rice paddies which make for great walks and photos. It’s also where Eat Pray Love was partly filmed and I saw loads of wannabe Julia Roberts walking around. The food in the brown wrapper was my 20p streetfood meal.
