Uncle Tan’s jungle camp, Malaysia

Had an amazing 3 days staying at a ‘Jungle Camp’ called Uncle Tan’s on the Kinabatangan River (Sungai Kinabatangan). Our camp was mattresses with mosquito nets in doorless windowless huts, with 4 hours of electricity a day and buckets of rainwater for showers. The camp was also totally flooded for our first day and half which meant wading through 1-2 foot of water to get to the toilet/canteen. Sounds rustic but it was AWESOME and the flooding just added to the jungle vibe! More importantly, we saw the most amazing range of wildlife while we there - the full list is on one of the pics in the next post. The highlight was definitely the orangutans but we saw plenty other beautiful creatures while on various jungle walks and boat trips.

However, despite the fact we saw so many animals and had heaps of fun, it was tinged with sadness because the reason you see such a high level of wildlife is partly due to the fact that much of the natural habitat has been logged or cleared for palm plantations, and the animals are therefore concentrated into a smaller area.

P.S I dropped my camera in the water when I fell down a hole (!!) so all the awesome animal pics are taken by the very talented Fraser. Luckily after 24 hours of drying out my camera made a full recovery!
