Banda Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia
Slight diversion from the usual post format, but in this case the words are more important than the pictures.
Banda Aceh is a small city on the Northern tip of Sumatra. Its the capital city in the province of Aceh and was hit really badly in the 2004 boxing day tsunami as it was the nearest town to the epicentre of the earthquake which preceded the tsunami. Around 167,000 people died and...

Ketambe, Sumatra, Indonesia (Part 1)
Mum and Dad came out to visit us to experience ‘backpacking’ and we had a great 3 night stay at Cinta Alam guesthouse, with 2 days of jungle trekking with the excellent Abu as our guide. Ketambe is an area on the edge of the beautiful Gunung Leuser National Park in the Aceh province. While trekking in the rainforest we were lucky to see lots of amazing wildlife...

Elephant Nature Park, Thailand
We took a daytrip to visit Elephant Nature Park, an elephant sanctuary an hour away from Chiang Mai. We had researched the nature of this park very carefully prior to visiting as there is an enormous amount of ‘elephant parks’ in Thailand, catering to the many tourists who want to ride elephants and watch them do tricks. We knew this was something we absolutely...

Semenggoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Borneo
The 1613-acre Semenggoh Nature Reserve accepts orangutans who have been either orphaned, injured, or rescued from captivity and reintroduces them back into the wild.
The primary goal of the centre is not to attract tourists, but to actually rehabilitate animals and get them back into the wild.
It was amazing to see these creatures up close. They are so human like, with amazing long arms...

Adventure Caving, Mulu National Park, Borneo
While visiting Mulu national park, we had the opportunity to go adventure caving. This meant entering a cave in the evening with a guide, with lots of clambering up rocks, squeezing through gaps, abseiling down mini-cliffs - all in the pitch black! The cave we went to was racer cave - so called because of a population of racer snakes who lie waiting for bats to fly by so they can...

Mulu National Park
Beautiful national park with jungle and caves. One of the giant caves known as “Deer Cave” is enormous and home to a huge (millions) population of bats. The pic that shows a squiggly line in the sky is a massive group of the bats exiting the cave at dusk in order to feed. The cave featured in an episode of planet earth.
